The Soledad Brothers

The Soledad Brothers is a one act about Jonathan Jackson’s 1970 attempt to free his brother George from prison and the Pulitzer nominated photo from the event. In an instant, a shot is fired, a photo is taken, and lives are changed forever.

I Dream A World: The Life and Times of Langston Hughes

Porchlight Theater Company’s school tour I Dream A World, written and directed by Tara Blau Smollen, brings the life of Langston Hughes during his time in Harlem to life through his poetry. Performed by a three-actor ensemble, this educational piece reached more than 10,000 students across the San Francisco Bay Area and was also presented at the Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley.

Nikki Giovanni and The Black Arts Movement

Porchlight Theater Company’s school touring production of Nikki Giovanni and the Black Arts Movement, was written and directed by Tara Blau Smollen and chronicles the life and work of poet Nikki Giovanni during the rise of the Black Arts Movement in America. Performed by a three-actor ensemble, the play toured middle and high schools throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, bringing the writing and cultural impact of a seminal Black poet directly into classrooms.
